Cosmetic ingredients like caffeine, redensyl, and capixyl have some supporting studies, but the evidence is weaker and the effect sizes are smaller than minoxidil. A cosmetic scalp serum cannot substitute for a medical treatment if significant hair loss is present, but it can provide modest support for general scalp health.
Protein treatments (hydrolysed keratin, wheat protein, rice protein) temporarily fill gaps in the damaged hair cuticle. They improve the hair's apparent strength and elasticity until the next shampoo washes them out. Useful for hair that has been chemically processed, heat-damaged, or mechanically stressed, but they do not restore the hair's original structural integrity — the protein is a filler, not a repair material.
Bond-building treatments (olaplex system, K-18) work on a different principle. They contain active molecules that seek out and reconnect broken disulfide bonds within the hair shaft — the bonds that give hair its structural strength. The effect is real for hair that has been damaged by chemical processes (bleaching, perming, relaxers) and is more durable than protein treatments because it targets the internal structure rather than the surface cuticle. But it is still not permanent — the bonds break again with further chemical or mechanical stress, and the treatment needs to be repeated.
Styling Products: Managing Appearance
Styling products change the hair's texture, hold, and appearance. They do not treat the hair or scalp. The main categories are:
Heat protectants contain film-forming polymers that create a barrier between the hair shaft and the heat tool. They reduce moisture loss during blow-drying, straightening, or curling. The protection is real but limited — heat above 180°C damages the hair cuticle regardless of what product is applied. A heat protectant reduces the damage; it does not eliminate it.
