What Vitamin C Does in the Skin
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) performs three distinct functions in skin, each supported by different mechanisms. Understanding these helps explain why formulation matters so much — a product that is optimised for one function may fail at the others.
Antioxidant protection. Vitamin C is a potent electron donor — it neutralises free radicals (unstable molecules that damage DNA, cell membranes, and collagen) by donating an electron without becoming destabilised itself. This is not a one-to-one reaction: a single vitamin C molecule can neutralise multiple free radicals before being depleted. The practical effect is that vitamin C applied before UV exposure reduces the oxidative damage caused by UVA and UVB radiation. It does not absorb UV light the way sunscreen does, but it limits the damage UV causes.
Collagen synthesis support. Vitamin C is a co-factor for the enzymes prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase, which stabilise and cross-link collagen molecules during their assembly. The Formulation Challenge
L-ascorbic acid — the form of vitamin C that skin cells can actually use — is notoriously unstable. It oxidises rapidly when exposed to air, light, and water, turning from clear to yellow to brown. Once oxidised, it is ineffective and can even stain the skin. Effective formulation requires solving several problems simultaneously.
Low pH. L-ascorbic acid is most stable and best absorbed at a pH below 3.5. At higher pH, it oxidises faster and penetrates less. L-ascorbic acid is the active form. Most studied, most effective, least stable. Requires low pH and careful formulation. Concentrations of 10-20% are supported by clinical evidence. Higher concentrations (above 20%) do not provide additional benefit and increase irritation.
Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate is a stabilised, oil-soluble derivative. It is more stable than L-ascorbic acid, penetrates well, and does not require a low pH. The practical hierarchy: L-ascorbic acid if your skin tolerates low pH and you want the strongest evidence. Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate if you have sensitive skin or want a more stable product. MAP or SAP if you are targeting pigmentation and want a gentle option.
How to Use Vitamin C in a Routine
Apply in the morning. Vitamin C's primary role is antioxidant protection against UV and environmental damage. Applied in the morning under sunscreen, it neutralises free radicals generated throughout the day. Using it at night is not wrong, but it wastes the antioxidant benefit — at night, there is no UV exposure to generate the free radicals that vitamin C neutralises.
Apply to clean, dry skin. Vitamin C is most effective when nothing interferes with its absorption. Apply after cleansing, before moisturiser. Wait two to three minutes for it to absorb before applying the next product.
Layer under sunscreen, not under retinoids. Vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night is the ideal division. Combining both in the same routine at the same time of day increases the risk of irritation without providing additional benefit.
Watch for signs of oxidation. A fresh vitamin C serum is colourless or very pale yellow. As it oxidises, it turns deeper yellow, then amber, then brown. "Higher concentration is always better." Concentrations above 20% L-ascorbic acid do not provide additional anti-aging benefit in controlled studies. They increase irritation without increasing efficacy. 10-15% is the optimal range for most people. 20% is the upper limit of what is supported by evidence.
"Vitamin C serums last as long as the bottle says." The expiration date on the bottle assumes the product is stored correctly and has never been opened. Once opened, L-ascorbic acid begins oxidising. A three-month shelf life after opening is a reasonable expectation for a well-formulated product. Discard it when the colour changes to amber or brown, regardless of the printed date.
"You can tell a good vitamin C serum by how it feels." Texture and absorption are determined by the vehicle, not the active ingredient. A watery serum that absorbs instantly may have a low concentration of a stabilised derivative. A slightly sticky serum that takes time to dry may contain high-concentration L-ascorbic acid. Texture does not correlate with efficacy for vitamin C.
"Vitamin C makes sunscreen unnecessary." Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection. It does not absorb UV light. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is still required. The combination — vitamin C under sunscreen — provides better protection than either alone, because the vitamin C neutralises free radicals generated by the UV that gets through the sunscreen film.
